Civic Ventures Hires Chief Operating Officer
Laura M. Chambers Brings Decades of Experience in
Nonprofit Management, Leadership, and Advocacy
SAN FRANCISCO — Civic Ventures, a think tank and program incubator helping society achieve the greatest return on experience, today named Laura M. Chambers, a leader in the nonprofit community, as its new chief operating officer. The job was created recently to manage the organization’s growth and to help run its new campaign to define the decades between the end of midlife careers and true retirement as a time to work for the greater good.
Chambers, who will join Civic Ventures in mid-March in its Washington, DC office, has a 20-year track record of success in the nonprofit sector, with extensive experience in management, leadership development, advocacy, fundraising, and coalition building.
Chambers is best known for her work at the Advocacy Institute, where she directed Leadership for a Changing World, a six-year $23 million program in partnership with the Ford Foundation. Over a 10-year period, Chambers also served as the Advocacy Institute’s interim CEO and as director of administration and development.
Earlier in her career, Chambers was executive director of the Women’s Housing Coalition, Hannah House (a transitional shelter for homeless women), and resource director at the Baltimore Mentoring Institute. Most recently, she has been senior program manager at the Service Employees International Union's Institute for Change, working to strengthen local unions across the country through leadership development.
Chambers also served in the Peace Corps in Senegal, West Africa. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Chambers attended Harvard University’s Leadership for the 21st Century program.
"We’re delighted to welcome Laura to the team," said John S. Gomperts, president of Civic Ventures. "She has tremendous experience in making big things happen and will be an extraordinary asset to our organization and our work."
"I’m captivated by Civic Ventures’ view of an entirely new stage of life and work between the end of midlife careers and the beginning of true old age," Chambers said. "It’s a thrill to be part of the effort to bring the power of the millions in this new stage to help tackle some of society’s toughest problems."

Many good paths
The transition to a next
chapter can involve recycling, changing, or starting a career. A 30-year
executive in advertising now teaches the subject at a local college. A Marine
Corps brigadier general now runs an urban hunger relief program. An avid
recreational biker now helps adults learn the importance of being active.
