The
Untold Story: New National Service Legislation Provides Benefits, Opportunities
for Americans in the Second Half of Life
Expert to Brief Reporters on Policy Innovations that Open Doors for Boomers
and Create Pathways to Encore Careers
WHAT:
Within
the week, the Senate will pass and President Obama is poised to sign major
bipartisan legislation that will expand national service opportunities for
all and will include — for the first time in decades — new service
opportunities for those who have finished their midlife careers.
Last week, the House passed the GIVE Act (Generations Invigorating Volunteerism
and Education), and the Senate is expected to pass a companion bill, the Serve
America Act, this week.
During a telephone media briefing, John Gomperts, president of Civic Ventures,
former chief of staff of the Corporation on National and Community Service
(AmeriCorps), and former CEO of Experience Corps, will discuss the bills and
answer questions.
Topics will include:
- Specific aims and components of the GIVE and Serve America Acts.
- Proposed “encore fellowships” that would help people formally
transition from midlife careers into encore careers in the nonprofit or public
sectors.
- Examples of encore fellows programs already in operation.
- Proposed “Silver Scholarships” and education awards for people
over 55 who make significant service commitments.
- Proposed expansion of AmeriCorps and what that will mean for older adults.
- Data on boomers looking for volunteer or encore career opportunities, and
which sectors have the greatest need for experienced talent.
