Ten Ways Your Organization Can Realize An Experience Dividend
People Everywhere Are Working for the Greater Good in the Second Half of Life

The first of 77 million baby boomers turn 60 in 2006, and the fifty- and forty-somethings are right behind.

As they wind down their primary careers, millions of boomers are determined to apply their experience to make a difference for others. Neither young nor old, they represent an extraordinary pool of social and human capital.

Organizations - existing non-profits and for-profit companies as well as ventures yet to be formed - have an historic opportunity to tap this newly abundant resource to tackle social problems and enrich community life. Surveys show that most boomers want to continue working, part-time or full-time, through what were once considered the retirement years. And people over 55 already contribute an estimated $162 billion worth of volunteering and unpaid caregiving each year, according to the Urban Institute.

Never before have so many people had so much experience and the time to put it to good use. But this generation is different from any that has crossed this age threshold before - healthier, better-educated, more demanding. New approaches and appeals will be needed to match their experience and passion with the nation's pressing unmet needs.

Here are 10 ideas for reaching out to boomers and engaging them in your organization:

1. Seize the Day
2. Raise expectations
3. Make it fun
4. Be Flexible
5. Dare to Ask
6. Pay to Play
7. Invest for the Long-term
8. Team Up
9. Advocate for Change

The transition to a next chapter can involve recycling, changing, or starting a career. A 30-year executive in advertising now teaches the subject at a local college. A Marine Corps brigadier general now runs an urban hunger relief program. An avid recreational biker now helps adults learn the importance of being active.
